Glennys Notes 02052020 - AIW - VE Day
The fellside way news with Glenny
Friday May 8th 2020 is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe day ‘ Although we are all in lockdown; we all can still remember that World War Two came to an end in Europe‘ and to all the brave sacrifices of our troops. Also, the animals & homing carrier pigeons that have fallen beside our brave service men and women. It is 2/5/2020 as I’m writing down these few notes, also 32 pigeons won a Dickins Medal for Gallantry during the 2nd World War perhaps one of the greatest of these was a pigeon named Commando a red chequer cock he flew 90 missions. Also, one of the bravest carrier pigeons was a pigeon called Cher Ami this pigeon was one of 600 used by the Americans during the 1st World War, she delivered a message after getting her leg shot off and shot through her body ‘ and blinded in one eye, but still got her message through saving 194 US soldiers and was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal with a Palm Oak Leaf Cluster for her heroic service in delivering 12 important messages in Verdun. many pigeons never made it; shot or lost in terrible conditions. This is one of the many reasons why our little Animals In War group continue with the animals in war story. It is hoped after this lockdown has eventually gone away, we will be able to continue with a few planned exhibitions in the area’ and to keep on demonstrating the great good animals and homing carrier pigeons have done for mankind.
